Seven Yr Photographic Project Documents Small-Town Living in the Earth West

Photographer Tim Capital of Virginia's serial "Last Best Hiding Place" is the product of septet years spent documenting life history in the Terra firma West. The series intertwines myths and realism; stereotypes and contemporary realities to create a nuanced portrait of a place and its the great unwashe.

Through with a fascination with depictions of the Solid ground West in pop culture, particularly films, Capital of Virginia was drawn to explore this seat. Interested in the relationship between myth and the reality of life in the West, he began documenting lifetime in small towns across Wyoming, South Dakota, Montana, and Utah.

Preferring to shoot with film, Richmond primarily used a large data format camera for "Last Outdo Hiding Place," first orienting himself by exploring a town and then venturing out to consider photographs of its residents. Of his decision to shoot analog, Richmond remarks, "I have seen no reason to stop consignment film in my cameras, accepting the limitations of straight photography, whilst embracing the veracious analogue 'moment.' The content of the snap is paramount, and yet the delicate tonality of the print leaving my darkroom is crucial to an appreciation of the image."

Richmond, after heptad years shot for the project, describes knowing the clamant he shot it that a particular image would make up the sunset:

I was on my mode dwelling when I photographed a drifter, Jonnie, in Miles City, who told me that he had lost 20 years of his recent memory, no recall whatever, otherwise he had been living in Missoula he discovered later. I knew and so that this would be the last image taken for the Last Go-to-meeting Hiding Place rule book.
